Young Harris College to Present Concert Featuring Community Band and Yonah Brass Band

Young Harris, GA – Young Harris College’s Division of Fine Arts will present the Young Harris College Community Band and Yonah Brass Band in concert Tuesday, Feb. 21, at 7 p.m. in Glenn Auditorium of the Clegg Fine Arts Building on the YHC campus. The performance is free and open to the public.

Directed by YHC Senior Instructor of Music and Director of Bands Mary Land, the 72-member Young Harris College Community Band is composed of talented local high school musicians and adult musicians from the local community. The group performs traditional band classics as well as entertaining “pops” music.

The northeast Georgia-based Yonah Brass was formed in Cleveland, Ga., in 1998 as a service organization committed to fulfilling the music needs of the region. The group responds to civic requests for musical support, serves as a basis for special celebrative church services and presents public concerts as well as an annual series of elementary school holiday concerts.

Yonah Brass will perform an inspiring rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” along withtwo American brass band selections. The YHC Community Band will delight audiences with music of the master composers including Clare Grundman, Percy Grainger, John Philip Sousa, Charles Carter and Frank Ticheli.

Young Harris College faculty members performing include Assistant Professor of Music Karen Calloway, Adjunct Instructor of Music Mike Campbell, D.A., Adjunct Instructor of Music Alan Denmon, Staff Accompanist Anita Guss, Staff Accompanist Frank McKinney, Assistant Professor of Music Leigh Miller, D.M.A., and Adjunct Instructor of Music Cheryl Star.

Young Harris College students performing include freshman Adham Hamilton, bassoon, of Powder Springs, Ga., sophomore Allison Arnold, flute, of Young Harris, Ga., freshman Lisa Dear, flute, of Blairsville, Ga., and freshman Rachel Bettis, flute, of Dawsonville, Ga.
